Norrahammars Bruk History

Norrahammars Bruk: A Tale of Swedish Craft, Iron, and Charm

Nestled in the verdant heart of Småland, Norrahammars Bruk has been a quiet custodian of Swedish craftsmanship since 1618. What began as a small ironworking community beside the rushing Tabergsån river evolved into one of Sweden’s most characterful foundries—first forging tools for industrious farmers, and later, homewares of enduring charm and integrity.

Though the ‘modern’ mill wasn’t built until 1877, Norrahammar was already humming with ironworking life. From humble beginnings crafting cast iron garden furniture, wood-burning stoves, and cookware, the foundry became a hub of innovation. As the 20th century progressed, Norrahammars Bruk expanded to produce radiators, electric stoves, hobs, baking ovens, heating cabinets—and even early microwaves. When Husqvarna acquired the mill in 1918, the company continued to flourish, remaining a stalwart of Swedish industry until the late 20th century.

Yet, amid all the utility, there was beauty. During the Swedish Empire's decorative peak, Norrahammar produced timeless cast iron pieces such as the No.5 garden urn, its daintier sibling the No.8, and original ornamental benches like the Norrahammar Sofa. In the 1930s, the company also turned its hand to pewter—trading under ‘Norrahammars Tenn’—and even took part in the celebrated Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 at Liljevalchs, creating a commemorative beaker that remains a collector's delight.

Norrahammars Bruk Today:

Craft Revived

While much of Norrahammars Bruk’s production shifted toward household appliances in the post-war years, its decorative and garden furniture lines nearly faded into history. But—like all good Swedish stories—this one has a revival. In the late 20th century, the original brand was brought back to life in Norrahammar itself.

Today, Norrahammars Bruk continues to produce beautifully made garden furniture and home accessories using traditional techniques, cast in recycled metals and finished with care. The design direction draws from the archives—pieces imagined during the height of the Swedish Empire and later refined by iconic designers like Folke Bensow and Erik Fleming, whose work was showcased at the legendary 1925 Paris Exposition and 1930 Stockholm Exhibition.

In a poetic twist, the descendants of the original mill director now act as the sole UK distributors of Norrahammars Bruk. These heirloom-quality pieces—benches, tables, planters, and more—are now represented by The Scandinavian Design Co. Ltd, ensuring that this historic brand of Scandinavian design continues to charm a new generation of homes and gardens.
